A long time ago, the Sun and the Moon were husband and wife. They lived happily in the sky and had many children — the stars. Every day, the Moon take care of their star children, watching over them and making sure they were safe. The Sun, on the other hand, was busy shining brightly over the world, giving light and warmth to the earth.
One day, the Sun came home feeling angry. He saw the star children running around and making noise, and without thinking, he scolded them harshly. In his anger, he accidentally burned some of the children with his hot rays. The Moon was heartbroken and blamed the Sun for hurting their children. Because of this, the Moon decided to leave the Sun and stay far away from him.
From that day on, the Sun and the Moon were separated. The Sun ruled the sky during the day, while the Moon appeared only at night with the stars. Sometimes, the Sun would try to approach the Moon, but they could never stay together for long. This is why the Sun and the Moon seem to chase each other across the sky but never meet.
The story teaches us that we should control our anger and think carefully before acting. It also reflects Filipino beliefs about family, responsibility, and the balance of nature. Today, Filipinos still tell this legend to explain why the Sun shines during the day and the Moon appears at night, and to remind people of the importance of care, love, and understanding within families.
